Planar semiconductor diodes coated with a neutron reactive material have been used for compact neutron detectors dating back to 1959. Unfortunately, these devices were limited to approximately 5% thermal neutron detection efficiency due to self-absorption effects. Microstructured semiconductor neutron detectors, or MSNDs, were introduced as a design to increase the efficiency of coated semiconductors.
